Renaissance-style idealism and abstract expressionism find an unexpected compatibility in this pairing of works by sculptor
Eric Boyer and painter Charlotte Foust. Each in his own way, the artists wring maximum effect from their respective mediums
as they give free reign to their intuition.
Boyer celebrates the surprisingly poetic and sensual qualities of steel wire mesh in his lifelike human torsos, introducing us
to new ways of perceiving both the material and the subject matter. Bearing traces of Greco-Roman classicism, these hauntingly
lovely expressions of inchoate longing and reverence for the human form are simultaneously idealized and realistic, their perfect
proportions speaking to an unobtainable standard of beauty even as their anatomically precise contours suggest a universal
perfection inherent to all human bodies. Light and shadow undulate and interact within the clothlike draping of the mesh, breathing
life and meaning into the forms.
In Charlotte Foust’s bold abstractions, moments of stillness contrast with powerful evocations of shape and color that animate
the paintings and imbue them with a seductive spontaneity. This creative energy bursts from within the layers and textures of
acrylic paint and graphite to create a strong sense of motion, the broad swathes of color giving the works a spacious, airy feel
and a lyrical quality. Lines and markings interwoven throughout provide a subtle structure as they lead the viewer’s eye through
the complexities of the paintings, hinting at an underlying order that balances the freewheeling abstractions of color and form.
