Danielle Shelley: Earth Measure Blues    May 1 - May 29, 2012

Opening reception: Friday, May 4, 5:00-7:00 PM

David Richard Contemporary is pleased to present, Earth Measure Blues, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Danielle Shelley.

Shelley’s last series of paintings were partly inspired by Donald Judd’s installation at Marfa, TX that consists of a series of 100 aluminum boxes with subtle differences one from the other. However, Shelley has always been intrigued with natural rhythms and slight variations that create shifts in pattern and perception, such as drum beats in music, moving and migrating cloud formations and systematic changes in color and size of similar shapes that cause an enhanced awareness of an otherwise unnoticeable feature. Shelley’s newest series, Earth Measure Blues, is a little different than her other series in that the basic composition and shapes, as well as colors, all change and shift. The reason is because this new series is based upon a series of collages comprised of earlier works cut into basic geometric shapes found in nature and arranged in varying patterns. The colors are also earth inspired, including the “blues,” which the reference in the title is more to the musical inspiration that provided the beat and entertained her during the creative process than to the color of the sky and water.

Danielle Shelley was born in Houston, Texas and grew up in the Bay Area where she studied painting, drawing, and color theory. She has lived and worked in diverse places in the US and internationally, including upstate New York, Los Angeles, Berkeley, West Africa and London, and since 2006, she has lived and worked in New Mexico. Shelley has traveled extensively in the Middle East, Europe and Asia. All of those diverse cultures and travel experiences inform her artwork, particularly her time spent as a Peace Corps volunteer in Ghana with the rich influences of the geometric and abstract African sculpture, polyrhythms of West African music, and color sensibility of African printed fabrics. Since 1996, her artwork has been presented in over 75 exhibitions in the US.

David Richard Contemporary is located in downtown Santa Fe north of the historic plaza and specializes in post-war abstract art including Abstract Expressionism, Color Field, geometric, hard-edged, Op, Pop and Minimalism in a variety of media. Featuring both historic and contemporary artwork, the gallery represents many established mid to late-career artists who were part of important art historical movements and tendencies that occurred during the 1950s through the 1980s on both the east and west coasts. The gallery also represents artist estates, emerging artists and offers secondary market works.
