An exhibition for AIPAD 2013 in celebration of the bicentenary of the births of Edouard Baldus and Charles Marville

In celebration of the bicentenary of the births of two of the greatest pof all time, Edouard Baldus and Charles Marville, James Hyman is pleased to present a special exhibition for AIPAD, which includes important works by both artists as well as masterpieces by other early champions of the medium: William Henry Fox Talbot, Hippolyte Bayard, Humbert de Molard, Charles Negre, John Beasley Greene, Alphonse Delaunay, Firmin-Eugene Le Dien and Gustave Le Gray.

At the heart of the exhibition is a complete set of four albums by Edouard Baldus documenting the building of the Louvre and Tuileries Palaces, one of the major architectural projects of the Second Empire. These four volumes, specially commissioned by Napoleon III, contain over five hundred salt prints, and are believed to be the finest set of albums to have come on the market.

The presentation also includes one of the most important works in the history of photography, one of Talbot's best-preserved photogenic drawings, Veronica in Bloom, from 1840. This is followed by two superlative paper negatives: Charles Negre's celebrated Hand Study, formerly in the Buhl Collection, and Humbert de Molard's famous study of Two Hunters.

The presentation concludes with works by John Beasley Greene of Karnak in Egypt, and by Gustave Le Gray of military manoeuvres at Chalons that show these photographers at their most formal and proto-modernist.

The booth will also include a selection of twentieth-century works by artists such as Bill Brandt, André Kertész, Dora Maar, Tony Ray-Jones, Edward Weston and Francesca Woodman.
