Opening reception for the artist: Saturday, March 10th, from 7-10pm
Fabien Castanier Gallery is pleased to announce a major exhibition of new work by Rimi Yang, her first solo exhibition with the gallery.
“The New Decadence” recalls periods of history rich with indulgence and fanfare. Fascinated by Eastern and Western art history, Yang references masterpieces by artists such as Fantin Latour, Botticelli, Eizan and Ingres. Her interpretation and treatment of these historical figures, however, is considerably different and distinctly all her own.
Known for her use of vibrant color, Yang creates portraits with tremendous energy and movement. Precision and detail in her figures’ faces fade into a background of colored chaos and broad brushstrokes; soulful faces dissipate into abstract forms. Through her fusion of various painting styles, Yang creates figures that are as beautiful as they are haunting.
Rimi Yang was born in South Korea and raised in Osaka, Japan. In 1986 she moved to Ohio where she studied at Bowling Green University. In 1991, she moved to Los Angeles where she studied at California State University and the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art, the Otis College of Art and Design and spent a summer in Florence, Italy, studying at the Florence Academy of Art.
