Die Galerie Proarta zeigt in dieser ersten grossen Einzelausstellung des schwedischen Künstlers Rolf Hanson aktuelle Gemälde aus dem Jahr 2012. Die Ausstellung ist vom
11. Oktober bis zum 24. November in den Räumen der Galerie zu sehen.
Rolf Hanson blickt auf eine bewegte Karriere zurück. Der 1953 in Stockholm geborene Künstler stellte im Jahr 1985 nach seinem Studium an der Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm und seinem darauf folgenden Aufenthalt in New York im Moderna Museet in Stockholm aus und repräsentierte Schweden 1988 an der Biennale in Venedig. Erfolgreiche Ausstellungen wie in der Berlinischen Galerie (1990) oder der Städtischen Kunsthalle in Düsseldorf (1998) folgten. Im Jahr 1999 gewann er den ersten Preis des Carnegie Art Awards.
Heute ist Rolf Hanson zu einem wichtigen Vertreter für expressionistische Malerei in Schweden geworden. Seine Bilder scheinen verwandt mit der beginnenden Farbfeldmalerei Mark Rothko’s aus den späten 1940er Jahren und verweisen in ihrer gewachsenen Fleckenstruktur auf Werke von Clifford Still. Rolf Hanson ist vor allem in seiner Farbwahl und dem gezielten Einsatz von Hell-Dunkel-Kontrasten mit dem amerikanischen Abstrakten Expressionismus verwurzelt. Wie seine neuesten Kompositionen beweisen, besteht der Schwerpunkt seiner künstlerischen Arbeit aus rhythmisch-abstrakten Farb-Flächen-Spielen. Die amorphen Formen seiner Kompositionen leben vom tonalen Kontrast zwischen den Ebenen, von der Abschattierungstechnik in ihren Nuancen und von den überraschenden leuchtenden Farbaktzenten.
Die Gemälde in der Ausstellung zeugen nicht zuletzt durch ihre altmeisterliche Malweise, nämlich Oelfarbe auf Holz, von glimmender Farbkraft. Erdtöne treten mit hellen Farben in einen explosiven Austausch. Die Gelb- und Orangetöne scheinen zu phosphoreszieren und erzeugen in ihrer Intensität eine mystische Anziehungskraft.
Der Betrachter erlebt den Raum im Bild als monumental wobei innerhalb der Abstraktion Räumlichkeit herausgearbeitet wird. Ihre Tiefenwirkung verstärken die Bilder durch die vielschichtige Malweise und die Transparenz. Besonders bekannt wurde Rolf Hanson durch seine Gemälde mit Treppenmotiven. In den Bildern dieser Malphase erschien das Motiv der Treppe in leuchtenden Farben.
Rolf Hanson lässt den Abstrakten Expressionismus nochmals von neuem aufleben und kann, durch die hohe Schule seiner Malerei, als Meister im klassischen Sinne bezeichnet werden.

In this first major solo exhibition of the Swedish artist Rolf Hanson, the Gallery Proarta is showing current paintings from the year 2012. The exhibition can be seen from 11 October to 24 November in the rooms of the gallery.
Rolf Hanson can look back on an eventful career. The artist, who was born in 1953 in Stockholm, after graduating from the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and then staying for a while in New York, went on to exhibit in the year 1985 at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, and represented Sweden at the Venice Biennale in 1988. Successful exhibitions followed, such as the one in the Berlinische Galerie (1990), and in the town Kunsthalle in Düsseldorf (1998). In the year 1999 he won first prize at the Carnegie Art Awards.
Today Rolf Hanson has become an important representative of expressionist painting in Sweden. His paintings seem to be reminiscent of Mark Rothko's initial Colour Field painting from the late 1940s, and with their enlarged patchwork structure suggest the works of Clifford Still. In his choice of colour and the select use of light/dark contrasts, Rolf Hanson is rooted above all in American Abstract Expressionism. As his latest compositions demonstrate, the focus of his artistic work consists of a rhythmic abstract play of coloured surfaces. The amorphous shapes of his compositions are brought alive by the tonal contrast between the planes, by the shadowing technique in its various nuances, and by the surprisingly luminous touches of colour.
The paintings in the exhibition express a shimmering force of colours, not least by their old masters’ method of painting, namely oil paint on wood. Earth tones come to an explosive interchange with bright colours. The yellow and orange tones seem to phosphoresce and in their intensity evoke a mystical power of attraction.
The viewer experiences the space in the picture as monumental, with the sense of spatiality being brought out from within the abstraction. The multi-layered brushwork and the transparency in the pictures adds to the appearance of depth. Rolf Hanson is particularly known for his paintings with a staircase theme. In the pictures of this period in his painting career the theme of stairways is presented in brilliant colours.
Rolf Hanson breathes a new life into Abstract Expressionism, and can, considering the accomplished technique of his paintings, be called a master in the classical sense.
