beyond limit(ation)s
April 21 - June 25, 2010
Opening: April 21, 18 - 20 Uhr
fashion meets art meets design meets architecture
Hussein Chalayan – Florian Borkenhagen – Zaha Hadid
The fashion designer and multiple „Designer of the Year“ of the prestigious British Fashion Awards is focused in the gallery’s “beyond limit(ation)s” series from 21st April to 25th June 2010. Gabrielle ammann // gallery is a place devoted to the dialogue between art, design and architecture. So the current exhibition combines Chalayan’s work with specially chosen white seating sculptures by architect and Pritzker Prize laureate Zaha Hadid, as well as with works by German designer/artist and twice Documenta participant Florian Borkenhagen.
The themes, motives and formal repertoires of Hussein Chalayan’s artworks and fashion shows explore the limits between the different artistic genres. Video, photography and sculpture
are fundamental parts of his creativity.
Through the exhibited works, Chalayan stages the voluntary or forced journeys of the individual
in a poetical way. The London based Turkish-Cypriote artist deals with the strong autobiographical
topic of immigration: in the video “Afterwords” (2000) he metamorphoses the painful situation of having to flee one’s home into an aesthetic experience. The interactions between immobility and movement, change and speed are a decisive part of Chalayan’s work. The exhibited video “Aeroplane Dress” (2001) conjugates fashion design with the poetics
of “travelling bodies”. The portraits of the performance artist Tilda Swinton as well as one sculpture from the cycle entitled “The Absent presence” (2005) tell about a scenario, depicting
how institutions may interrogate and scrutinize individuals, and how they may create new measures for living in Britain.
„beyond limit(ation)s“ is running from 19th March until 19th August 2010
