(2) Johann Wolfgang von der Auwera

(b Würzburg, 24 Oct 1708; d Würzburg, 27 March 1756). Son of (1) Jakob von der Auwera. He trained under his father and also with another court sculptor, Claude Curé (d 1745), before travelling to Vienna in 1730 to complete his artistic education at the Akademie. Returning to Würzburg in 1736, Johann Wolfgang took over his father’s workshop. He worked for the Prince–Bishop, Friedrich Karl von Schönborn, producing a small-scale alabaster group of Gladiators (1736–8; Würzburg, Residenz), and in 1738 he was appointed court sculptor. In 1740 Auwera and the architect Balthasar Neumann spent some months together on a study tour through the Rhineland and the Netherlands. On his return, Johann Wolfgang married Curé’s daughter, Maria Cordula Curé (d 1764). In 1743 he was granted citizenship of Würzburg.

Part of the Auwera family
