Cabel [Kabel], Adriaan [Adriaen; Ary] van der [Corydon; Geestigheit]
(b Rijswijk, nr The Hague, 1630–31; d Lyon, bur 16 June 1705). Dutch painter, etcher and draughtsman. He studied with Jan van Goyen, whose influence is reflected in early paintings such as Dune Landscape with Peasants beside a Cottage (ex-Semenoff priv. col., St Petersburg). He travelled to Rome around 1655, stopping at Paris and Lyon on the way. He met Willem Schellinks in 1664, by which time he had joined the Schildersbent, the confraternity of Dutch artists in Rome. Once in Italy he was influenced by Claude Lorrain, Pier Francesco Mola (ii) and Salvator Rosa. Besides many pastoral landscape drawings with sheep and herdsmen, he drew views of Sicilian sites, indicating a possible stay there. From 7 December 1688 until his death he was registered in Lyon, a view of which he depicted in a drawing now in the Institut Néerlandais, Paris. His 60 or 70 etchings, representing either classical landscapes or harbour scenes, were made after his own designs and show a confident hand. His painted work also comprises seascapes, several still-lifes, figure pieces and portraits (e.g. Jean Estival; Lyon, Mus. B.-A.).
