(2) Michel Corneille (ii) [le fils]

(b Paris, 2 Oct 1642; d Paris, 16 Aug 1708). Painter and engraver, son of (1) Michel Corneille (i). Initially trained by his father, he later studied under Charles Le Brun and Pierre Mignard. In 1659 he won a prize from the Académie Royale that allowed him to visit Italy. When he returned to France he was received (reçu) as a member of the Académie in 1663 with Christ Appearing to St Peter (Rennes, Mus. B.-A. & Archéol.). He became an associate professor in 1673, a professor in 1690 and a counsellor in 1691. He admired the Italian masters, especially the Carracci, and finished his training by copying their works. The rich collector Everard Jabach employed both Michel and his brother, (3) Jean-Baptiste Corneille, to engrave the best Italian drawings in his collection.
