Donauer [Thonauer; Tonauer], Hans, I

(b ?Munich, c. 1540; d Munich, before May 1596). German painter. He worked at the Munich court of Duke William V of Bavaria, and his career is known from court documents. As was customary for a court artist, his work covered several fields: he was active in fresco and oil painting and as a draughtsman; he also apparently organized festivities and painted miniatures. In his later years he was entrusted with duties relating to building maintenance. In artistic conception Donauer’s work lay between his predecessor Hans Mielich, a decisive influence, and Friedrich Sustris, active at the court from 1573. Though an artist of lesser stature than either, Donauer had a certain creative power that set him apart from the purely craftsmanlike type of court artist.
