Grajera y Herboso, José

(b Laredo, Santander, 24 Aug 1818; d Oviedo, 31 May 1897). Spanish sculptor. He studied first at the Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País, Oviedo. In 1841 he settled in Madrid, attending classes at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de S Fernando under sculptors such as Elias Vallejo and José Piquer y Duart. He also worked in the studio of José Tomás (1795–1848). He competed in the exhibition organized by the Academia de S Fernando in 1850, submitting three figurines. Other early works include a number of ornamental pieces made for the gardens of La Granja de S Ildefonso, Madrid.
