Izdebsky, Vladimir (Alekseyevich)

(b Odessa, 1882; d New York, 1965). Ukrainian sculptor and impresario. After studying at the Art School in Odessa from 1897 to 1904, he lived in Germany (until 1909) where he was associated with Vladimir Bekhteyev (1878–1971), Vasily Kandinsky, Gabriele Münter and Alexei Jawlenski and was a founder-member of the Neue Künstlervereinigung München in 1909. Through his friends Izdebsky became especially interested in the latest Western trends in art, which he discussed in an essay for the Kiev journal Iskusstvo i pechatnoye delo (‘Art and printing’, 1910, nos 2–3). In 1908 he contributed sculptures to the 19th exhibition of the Association of South Russian Artists in Odessa.
