Maccari, Cesare

(b Siena, 1840; d Rome, 1919). Italian painter. He studied decoration at the Istituto d’Arte in Siena and also observed the sculptor Tito Sarrocchi (1824–1900) at work in his studio. Maccari became a friend of Luigi Mussini and Alessandro Franchi, and he decided to devote himself to painting. On winning a scholarship, he studied in Rome. He achieved success with Fabiola (Siena, Col. Chigi–Saracini) and afterwards he worked on the decoration of the church of the Sudario.
