Master of Mary of Burgundy

( fl Ghent, c. 1469–c. 1483)). South Netherlandish illuminator, painter and draughtsman. He is named after his most celebrated work, the Hours of Mary of Burgundy (Winkler, 1915; see §1(ii) below). He was one of the most original of the early Netherlandish artists, and his work, for such patrons as Margaret of York (1446–1503), wife of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, and his daughter, Mary of Burgundy, movingly reflects the introverted spirituality of the Burgundian dynasty’s last decade. The numerous iconographic and formal innovations of his manuscripts determined the highly accomplished style of the GHENT–BRUGES SCHOOL of illuminators well into the 16th century.

Part of the Masters, anonymous, and monogrammists family
