Master of Zweder van Culemborg

( fl c. 1420–40). North Netherlandish illuminator. He is named after a Missal with a canon page showing a bishop, commended by St Martin, the patron of Utrecht, worshipping Christ on the Cross (Bressanone, Bib. Semin. Maggiore, MS. C.20(N.62)). The bishop is identified by a coat of arms in the border as Zweder van Culemborg, who was nominated Bishop of Utrecht in 1423 but was unable to enter the town until 1425. He left for the Council of Basle in 1431 and died there in 1433. It is most probable that the Missal was produced c. 1425, soon after the Bishop’s appointment. It contains 16 historiated initials, and 13 of these were painted by the illuminator known as the Master of Zweder van Culemborg, who was probably active in Utrecht. The canon page itself, however, is not by the Zweder Master.

Part of the Masters, anonymous, and monogrammists family
