(2) Israhel van Meckenem (ii)
(b Meckenheim, c. 144045; d Bocholt, 10 Nov 1503). Son of (1) Israhel van Meckenem (i). He is thought to have trained from 1457 with his father at Bocholt. An engraving (Lehrs, ix, no. 605) suggests that he was in Cleve in 1465, though this date has been questioned (Koreny, in Hollstein: Ger.). The many copies he executed of works by the Master E.S. make it likely that he visited southern Germany c. 1466 and became apprenticed to this master, plausibly until the Master E.S.s death c. 14678. Israhel van Meckenem may then have purchased and subsequently retouched the Masters plates.
Part of the Meckenem family
