Mildorfer, Josef Ignaz

(b Innsbruck, 13 Oct 1719; d Vienna, 8 Dec 1775). Austrian painter. After training under his father, Michael Ignaz Mildorfer (1690–1747), in Innsbruck, from 1738 he worked as an assistant to Paul Troger in Vienna. In 1741 he won a prize at the Akademie der Kunst for a life drawing, and in 1742 another for an oil painting of Cain Killing his Brother Abel (Innsbruck, Tirol. Landesmus.). His major early works included frescoes (1743) in the dome of the Wallfahrtskirche zu Unseren Lieben Frau in Hafnerberg, altarpieces of the Pietà (1742; Telfs, Heimatmuseum), the Assumption of the Virgin (1743–4; abbey of Novacella, nr Bressanone) and the Last Judgement (1748; Wilten, Stiftsgal.) and a series of smaller panels depicting battle scenes (1742; Salzburg, Barockmus.). In 1745 he was elected a member of the Vienna Akademie, and in 1751 he became professor of painting there; at the same time he was appointed court painter to Duchess Emmanuela of Savoy. He was commissioned to decorate the Menagerie Pavilion at Schönbrunn in 1752 and in 1753 to execute a fresco in the dome of the Kapuzinergruft depicting the Vision of the Prophet Ezekiel. His most important altar painting of this period was the Departure of the Apostles Peter and Paul (c. 1760; Vienna, Ulrichskirche).
