Moretti, Luigi

(b Rome, 2 Jan 1907; d Isola di Capraia, 14 July 1973). Italian architect, urban planner and writer. Trained as an architect in Rome, he graduated in 1930 and advanced rapidly through contacts within the Fascist party. His principal early works in Rome are the Casa della Gioventù (1933–40) in Trastevere, the planning of the Foro Italico (1934–40), the design of some individual buildings there—the Casa delle Armi (1934–6), a gymnasium for Mussolini and the Cella Commemorativa (1940)—and a competition entry (1938) for the Ministry of External Affairs Building (EUR), Rome. Already eclectic, his architecture of this period combined the Rationalism of the Milan–Como school with references to the monumental architecture of Imperial Rome. After the war he initially worked in Milan, building an apartment hotel in Via Corridoni and a residential and commercial complex at Via Rugabella. In Rome he designed two apartment buildings—Casa Astrea (1949) in Monteverde Nuovo and Casa Il Girasole (1950) in the Parioli district—and a sculptural, free-flowing villa, La Saracena (1954), at Santa Marinella.
