Nisart, Pere [Pedro]

( fl Mallorca, 21 June 1468–3 June 1470). Painter, active in Spain. He was influenced by Netherlandish painting, but his origin is unknown; his surname might suggest, however, that he came from Nice. With a local painter, Rafel Moger, he was commissioned to execute an altarpiece for the chapel of the Confraternity of St George in the church of S Antonio de Padua in Palma de Mallorca. The contract is dated 21 June 1468 and specifies the division of labour. Nisart’s contribution was still not completed on 3 June 1470. The central panel of the altarpiece, St George and the Dragon, and two of the predella panels, depicting the Pietà and the Entry of James I of Aragón into Palma and its Capture from the Moors (Palma de Mallorca, Mus. Dioc.), are certainly by Nisart. St George, mounted on a white horse, stands out against a cityscape in the background; behind him is the princess, and beneath his steed is the dragon. It has been suggested that the panel was based on the lost St George by Jan van Eyck, which was purchased in Valencia for Alfonso V in 1444. The painting, executed in tempera and oil, has been highly praised. The seascape of the bay and port accurately represents the historical geography of the site, but the walled city is Netherlandish rather than Mediterranean in appearance. This same historic sense permeates the predella scene of James I’s entry into Palma. Some of the portrait details and reflections are of high quality. No other authenticated work by Nisart survives.
