Pagno di Lapo (Portigiani)

(b Fiesole, nr Florence, 1408; d Florence, 1470). Italian sculptor and architect. He spent much of his early career working for Donatello and Michelozzo: he is documented in connection with the font in the Siena Baptistery (1428) and the external pulpit of Prato Cathedral (1430–33). He was engaged on mainly decorative work in S Lorenzo, Florence, c. 1440 and in 1442 supplied the bronze for the doors of the north sacristy in Florence Cathedral. About 1445 he supervised the decoration of the courtyard and perhaps the chapel of the Palazzo Medici and then worked on the tabernacle of the Annunciation in SS Annunziata, Florence. In 1447, together with Giovanni Rossellino (1417–?1496), he executed the tabernacle over the baptismal font in Massa Marittima Cathedral.
