(1) Crispijn [Crispiaen] (van) de Passe (i)

(b Arnemuiden, 1564; d Utrecht, bur 6 March 1637). Engraver, draughtsman, print publisher and painter. He produced many prints, often in the form of series, which he engraved from his own or other painters’ designs and most of which he published himself. He often signed his works with the monogram CP. He began his career in Antwerp, where he was registered as a master of the Guild in 1584–5. Also at this time he made contact with Marten de Vos, many of whose designs he engraved. Crispijn’s first dated engraving is a portrait of Justus Lipsius (1587; Hollstein, no. 767). In 1588 he engraved a series of 46 biblical illustrations after Marten de Vos for Christoph Plantin.
