Hungarian family of goldsmiths. The most well-known member was József Prandtner (i) (b before 1783; d 18 Dec 1819). In 1783 he was apprenticed to the master goldsmith János Schwager. In 1791 he married Schwager’s daughter and later inherited the workshop. His elegant Empire-style works with minimal decoration are marked with his surname or his initials JP. After his death his widow managed the workshop. József Prandtner (ii) (b Pest [now Budapest], 1796; d after 1839) studied in Vienna and took over his father’s workshop in 1827. He worked in the Biedermeier style. The Prandtner family also included János Prandtner and József Prandtner (iii). The work of the different family members can be recognized by their individual styles, as the marks that they used are very similar.
