(2) Jan Antonín [Johann Anton] Quitainer

(b Prague, 13 Aug 1709; d Prague, 7 March 1765). Son of (1) Ondrej Filip Quitainer. In 1729 he took over his father’s workshop and became the busiest Rococo sculptor in Prague. He, too, worked for St Thomas (high altar c. 1730 and subsequently a pulpit). From 1734 he worked on side altars in St Giles and from the 1740s for the Premonstratensians at the Strahov monastery. It was then that he established his ideal figure: gently drooping, with a mildly sorrowful facial expression and austere, sometimes shell-like drapery. Around 1750 he achieved the reputation in Prague of being ‘optimus in sua arte’. He supplied statues for the side altars of St Henry in the Nové Mesto [New Town] quarter of Prague, a statue of the Blessed Herman for the façade of the Strahov church, a statue of St John of Nepomuk (1752) for the Pohorelec church and a statue of St Norbert between two Angels (c. 1755) for the monastery gate. From the 1760s he worked on side altars for the Strahov monastery, but the statues he supplied there are undistinguished, showing Quitainer’s weariness of style and his inability to achieve a new ideal of form.

Part of the Quitainer family
