Schuster, Franz

(b Vienna, 26 Dec 1892; d Vienna, ?26 Jan 1968). Austrian architect, teacher and writer. He studied architecture at the Kunstgewerbeschule, Vienna, under Heinrich Tessenow, graduating in 1919; he subsequently worked for Tessenow on the Gartenstadt (1921–2), Hellerau, and a housing estate (Siedlung; 1920–21) at Pössneck. He returned to Vienna and in 1923–5 was chief architect of the Österreichische Verband für Siedlungs- und Kleingartenwesen; there he executed the Schutzbund Siedlung ‘Am Wasserturm’ (1924) in a vernacular style (Heimatstil ) strongly influenced by Tessenow, with small detached houses in whitewashed brickwork and pitched roofs arranged in a picturesque layout. He lived on the estate himself and experimented with the design of furniture appropriate for small houses. In 1926 he entered practice with Franz Schacherl; they designed a Montessori school (1926), with cubic blocks of classrooms grouped around a central hall. He also founded the magazine Der Aufbau and taught at the Kunstgewerbeschule, Vienna.
