Seddon.
English family of artists and craftsmen. (1) George Seddon was the founder of the largest firm of furniture-makers in London in the 18th century. About 1785 he took his sons Thomas Seddon (1761–1804) and George Seddon (1765–1815) into partnership and the firm traded as George Seddon & Sons; between 1790 and 1795, while his son-in-law Thomas Shackleton ( fl 1780–c. 1795) was a partner, it traded as George Seddon, Sons, & Shackleton. In 1815 Thomas’s son Thomas Seddon (1792–1864) took over the business and in 1817 was joined by his brother George Seddon (1796–1857). In 1827 the latter went into partnership with the cabinetmaker and upholsterer Nicholas Morel ( fl 1790–1830) to make furniture for Windsor Castle, Berks, and the firm traded as Morel & Seddon; in 1830 George’s brother Thomas joined this partnership. After 1833 the name of the business reverted to Seddon & Sons. (2) Thomas Seddon, son of the second of that name and great-grandson of the founder, worked in the firm for a short time; afterwards he and his brother, (3) J. P. Seddon, pursued careers independent of the firm, which closed in 1868. Most of the Seddons’ furniture bearing a trade label or stamp is of respectable commercial quality.
