Sokolov-Skalya, Pavel (Petrovich)

(b Strel’na, nr St Petersburg, 3 July 1889; d Moscow, 3 Aug 1961). Russian painter and graphic artist. He studied in Moscow at the studio of Il’ya Mashkov from 1914 to 1918. From 1920 to 1922 he was again Mashkov’s student in the department of easel painting at the Higher Artistic and Technical Workshops (Vkhutemas), where he also studied monumental painting. From 1921 to 1924 he was president of the Objective Reality (Bytiye) art group. In 1926 he joined the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (AKhRR) and in 1949 he became a member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR.
