Strixner, Johann Nepomuk

(b Altötting, 1782; d Munich, 1855). German draughtsman, copper engraver and lithographer. He studied in Munich from 1797, learning the art of copper-engraving from Johann Jakob Dorner I. In 1803 he was employed as a draughtsman at the electoral gallery and was commissioned by Johann Christian von Mannlich, the director of the Gemäldegalerie und Kunstinstitut Bayerns, to make a series of engravings after Raphael, which were published under the title Zeichnungsbuch für Zöglinge der Kunst und für Liebhaber aus Raffaels Werken gezogen. In the same year Strixner learnt the art of lithography. In 1808 he published lithographs of Dürer’s marginal drawings under the title Albrecht Dürers christlich mythologische Handzeichnungen zu Kaiser Maximilians Gebetbuch. This was the first publication of Dürer’s drawings: they quickly passed into circulation and became a model for 19th-century illustrators. The Dürer book also contributed greatly to the popularity of lithography, by proving it to be both an efficient reproductive technique and a means of artistic expression.
