Thomire, Pierre-Philippe

(b Paris, 5 Dec 1751; d Paris, 9 June 1843). French bronzeworker and sculptor. He received his early training as a sculptor at the Académie de St Luc, Paris, where he studied under Augustin Pajou and Jean-Antoine Houdon. Rather than pursue this vocation he elected to follow his father, Luc-Philippe Thomire, into the potentially more lucrative trade of the bronzeworker (bronzier). He received his mastership as a bronze-founder ( fondeur) in 1772 and trained in the establishment of Pierre Gouthière, before setting up his own business about 1775. It was probably from Gouthière that Thomire learnt the necessary refinement of technique and the sure handling of design that was to be the foundation of his success.
