Vasaro, Giovanni [Zoan] Maria

(b ?Faenza; fl c. 1475–1550). Italian ceramics painter. Although he was probably a native of Faenza, as his decorative repertory would suggest, he was active at the beginning of the 16th century in Castel Durante. His most famous signed work, a goblet (1508; ex-Met., New York), was made in honour of Pope Julius II. From this and other works that can be attributed to him on stylistic grounds, it is evident that he specialized in symmetrical compositions for plates, with a border of grotesques, trophies and musical instruments surrounding a central cavetto. Although his life and work are poorly documented, a survey of the maiolica of this period indicates that his work was very influential on maiolica artists who worked around Castel Durante during the first half of the 16th century.
